LATINO CHRISTIAN SINGER PUCHI COLON BRINGS HIS BRAND OF
‘SALSA PRAISE’ TO THE GOSPEL MUSIC SCENE
By GENIKWA R. WILLIAMS
TRENTON, NJ (March 2008)—Take one zesty singer with a soul on fire for Christ, add a spicy-hot, nine-piece band, then mix in a lot of Latin flavor to season it just right, and what do you get?
Salsa Praise—the sizzling-hot, new brand of praise-and-worship music introduced to the gospel music scene by Latino Christian singer and musician, PUCHI COLON.
On Tuesday, April 1, 2008, Colon will release his latest CD entitled “SP2”—short for “Salsa Praise 2.” This new project is the long-awaited sequel to “Salsa Praise,” Colon’s first-ever
English-language album released back in 2002. “SP2” is being released and distributed by LGR Records, an independent gospel recording label in Mt. Holly, NJ.
Like the lively, Cuban-style music typically played in Latin dance clubs, the salsa played by Colon and his orchestra features congas, bongos, timbales, maracas, keyboards, bass, and lots of
horns. But Colon’s variety of salsa also includes another very special ingredient:
Heartfelt worship and praise for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
For Colon, a 31-year-old Trenton native, Latin music has been a major part of life.
“I grew up in a musical family. They were all into Latin music,” said this Puerto Rican singer and percussionist. “Pretty much everybody was a musician in my dad’s family. My dad was a
musician, my uncle…”
But, for the most part, Colon said the focus wasn’t on glorifying God.
“I grew up in all the turmoil of the secular world. My dad was into drugs and a lot of crazy stuff,” Colon recalled. “Throughout all of that, God found me and drew me into the plan He had for
my life.”
That world of “crazy stuff” began to change when Colon turned 12 and his grandmother started taking him to church, he said. In the house of God, Colon started playing drums and keyboard
and he loved it.
“I always knew I wanted to do music. My passion was music. I mean, that’s the thing that kept me in church, to be honest, until I actually had my encounter with the Lord,” he confessed. “I just
wanted to play.”
“I never thought I would end up singing…never thought I would be leader of a band…never thought I’d have world records. It was never in my wildest dreams,” said Colon. “But God had a
plan for my life and I believe He’s not finished.”
Since being born again, Colon has dedicated his life and his music to the Lord. He says his passion is to share the Gospel message through his music in hopes of bringing lost souls to
Christ. And salsa music just happens to be his unique way of expressing his love for God. Colon says he is the first artist to have a Christian salsa album completely recorded in English.
In 1996, he recorded his first CD, “Voy A Comenzar,” which opened doors for his music and ministry. The following year, the band began to form and he’s been touring the United States ever
since.
In all, Colon has recorded nine CDs. All but two of them—both installations of “Salsa Praise”—have been in Spanish. Colon says his first CD recorded in English was “an experiment.” When
he saw how great the impact was for the Kingdom of God, he decided to embark on a second English-language project. But the inevitable storms of life and the unpredictable nature of the
music business delayed the process, said Colon.
Now, six years later, the long-anticipated sequel to “Salsa Praise” is ready to burst onto the scene. Colon says his growth in the music industry and in the Lord is reflected on this new project.
His acceptance in both the English and Spanish markets granted him the ability to reach the masses, which is exactly what this evangelist-at-heart believes he is “called” to do.
“I can see all types of people buying it and enjoying it,” said Colon. “Most of all, I hope that God enjoys the worship.”
“SP2” features a variety of fresh original tunes that he wrote—the first English lyrics Colon has ever penned—including “Thank You,” which will be the first single released from the album.
The CD also has three cover songs, including “I Can Only Imagine,” recorded by Mercy Me, and “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High,” a well-known praise-and-worship tune.
Colon’s stellar career and devoted music ministry has been blessed with souls saved, lives changed, and numerous other accolades. In 2003, he was named New York Christian Radio’s
"Artist of the Year" for 2002-2003. In 2004, he won the American Christian Award for “Best Latin CD” for his CD release "Lo Mejor De Mi, Para El.”
An accomplished performer, arranger, and producer, Colon’s powerful vocals have often been compared to those of salsa singer Tito Nieves—whose hit 1990’s dance tune “I Like It Like
That” gained sweeping popularity as the theme song in a series of Burger King TV commercials.
Colon has also been featured on shows like “Praise the Lord!” on TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network) and “Puerto Rican Panorama” on Philadelphia’s Channel 6-ABC. He was also
showcased at “Expolit 2004,” an annual Christian literature and music convention held in Miami, FL.
He and his wife, JoAnn, have four sons: Gabriel, Mickael, Joel, and Samuel, ranging in age from six to 13. Next to the Lord, Colon says his family is the most important aspect of his life. And,
Colon admits, he’s still learning to balance family, ministry, and career.
“We just started baseball season and my kids are all signed up, so it’s going to be like a madhouse the next couple of months,” he chuckled. “But we’re good.”
In addition, Colon and his wife, who also sings, are involved with the music ministry at their home church.
LGR Records will be hosting a CD release party for Colon 8 p.m., Monday, April 21 at Warmdaddy’s on Columbus Boulevard in Philadelphia, PA. For more information, visit
